Gunmen Attack Rivers Monarch's Palace During Cultural Festival

A violent attack on the traditional ruler of Finima Community in Rivers State has prompted a police investigation after gunmen invaded a cultural masquerade display.

HRH Dagogo Brown, the Amadabo of Finima Community in Bonny Local Government Area, narrowly escaped death when the attackers shot sporadically at his palace during the event on Saturday. The assailants also allegedly destroyed property and injured several residents.

The violence reportedly erupted following a dispute over cultural rites, masquerade displays, and the rights of families to perform certain traditional activities. The police spokesperson in Rivers, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident and stated that normalcy has been restored.

"Investigation is ongoing into the matter, while one of the gang members has been arrested," Agabe said, adding that the suspect is providing useful information. Efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing gang members. Despite no reported deaths, several residents sustained gunshot wounds and machete cuts.

Bonny Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Abinye Pepple, condemned the attack and destruction of property, assuring residents of justice for those involved. He urged fleeing residents to return and remain calm, as security operatives have been deployed to protect lives and property in the Finima Community, which hosts critical national energy assets like the Nigeria LNG plant.
