One operative, six suspected secessionists killed in Anambra gun battle

A joint security operation in Anambra State has led to a significant confrontation with suspected secessionists, resulting in the deaths of six individuals believed to be members of the group. The operation, conducted in the Ogbaru Local Government Area, also claimed the life of one security operative and left another injured.

At the end of the encounter, six suspected members of the armed group were neutralised, while others fled the area, with some reportedly sustaining gunshot injuries.

The clearance operation, which involved personnel from various security agencies including the police, Department of State Services, army, and navy, was launched based on credible intelligence about armed criminal groups operating in the area. After a four-hour trek through challenging terrain, security forces encountered the suspects, who opened fire, initiating a prolonged exchange of gunfire.

The operation, however, recorded the death of one security operative and injury to another when an explosive device suspected to have been planted in the area detonated.

During the operation, security forces dismantled identified camps and structures associated with the group and recovered weapons, including pump-action guns and charms. The injured operative is receiving medical attention. The state's Commissioner of Police commended the participating personnel for their bravery and highlighted the success of the operation as a testament to effective intelligence sharing, inter-agency collaboration, and community support in disrupting the activities of violent elements.
