Gunmen kill Rivers vigilante leader, three women in Omoku

A local vigilante leader and three women were killed in a violent attack by unidentified gunmen in Omoku, Rivers State, Nigeria, on Monday evening. The incident occurred along Oba Road, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting many residents to flee for safety.

The incident happened a few minutes past 5 p.m. Our commander was with his sister and her friend, seated around his neighbourhood, when the unknown gunmen approached and shot him dead.

The deceased has been identified as Ozomela Stephen Nwaocha, the Omoku Zonal Commander of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC). Sources indicate that Nwaocha was relaxing with his sister and a friend near his residence when the assailants opened fire. The gunmen also shot and killed three women at the scene, while two other individuals sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Comrade Nkem Godknows, the Public Relations Officer of OSPAC, confirmed the details of the attack and appealed for calm among residents. He assured that OSPAC, in conjunction with other security agencies, is working to identify and apprehend those responsible. Godknows also used the opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by OSPAC members, citing a lack of adequate welfare and financial support, and urged the public to provide assistance to the group.

We are not adequately taken care of. We are not paid, and we have no reliable source of income. We have little or no support or encouragement. I am calling on the general public to support OSPAC.

The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the killings, describing the incident as disturbing to the relative peace in the state. The Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, promised that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and urged the community to provide any useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation. Security operatives are conducting patrols to restore and maintain order in the area.
