Gurugram's IFFCO Chowk road caves in after sewer line collapse

A significant sinkhole, measuring approximately 10 feet by 10 feet, opened up on the service road at IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram on Tuesday. The collapse occurred after a master sewer line failed, creating a gaping hole on the Delhi-Jaipur side of the road and prompting immediate traffic restrictions.

The incident happened around 3 pm, after which the damaged portion was barricaded. The repair of the sewage line will begin from Wednesday morning, and all efforts will be made to complete the work at the earliest.

The road subsidence added to Gurugram's ongoing civic challenges, following severe waterlogging and traffic chaos caused by heavy rainfall the previous day. Traffic police quickly cordoned off the damaged section, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) closed two service lanes. While floodwaters had largely receded by Wednesday morning, the sinkhole highlighted deeper infrastructure issues.

Compounding the problems, damage to key water and sewage pipelines has disrupted water supplies across several sectors. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had recently resolved a pipeline leak near the Basai water treatment plant, but further damage during excavation work last Saturday exacerbated the water supply issues over the weekend. Affected areas include sectors 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 56, 57, and 58 to 76.

Preliminary findings indicate that a GMDA master sewer line is running beneath/along the affected location, and possible leakage or failure of the sewer line may have caused soil erosion resulting in the collapse.

GMDA officials stated that the affected master sewer line runs from Ambience Mall to Rajiv Chowk. Repair work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday morning, with efforts focused on completing the task promptly. An executive engineer from GMDA confirmed that a detailed inspection would be conducted to determine the precise cause of the sewer line's collapse. NHAI officials noted that water had accumulated within the sinkhole and suggested that a possible leakage or failure of the GMDA sewer line beneath the affected area may have led to soil erosion and the subsequent collapse.
