Gustavo Costas: “I set the bar as high as possible, or I would stay home”

After Cerro Porteño’s tense victory over Nacional in the neighborhood derby, coach Gustavo Costas said the team had made progress but still had much more to build.

He noted that the club had won only two matches and “hasn't won anything yet,” adding that he did not want either his players or himself to accept mediocrity. “I try to set the bar as high as possible, or I would stay home,” he said.

The Argentine coach said he had not joined Cerro Porteño merely to pass through the club or complete a one-year contract. He wanted to take the team as high as possible and compete for championships and cups. “In football, anything can be done,” Costas said, provided the team builds a group capable of challenging anyone.

Costas also called on supporters to stand behind the players and the club during difficult periods. He rejected the idea that the coach alone deserved credit for the team’s results, saying the players were responsible for the wins. He added that support from the stands can help when an opponent is controlling the match and give Cerro Porteño the strength to turn it around.
