Gustavo Puerta Overtakes Zahovic as Greek Football’s Most Expensive Signing

Gustavo Puerta now sits at the top of the list of the most expensive transfers in Greek football. Olympiacos paid €20 million for the Colombian midfielder, making him the costliest signing in the history of a Greek club.

The move pushed aside a group of high-profile players who have left their mark on Greek football. The list includes Djibril Cisse, Diogo, Giovanni and Zlatko Zahovic, along with several other expensive additions made by Greek clubs.

Panathinaikos paid €8 million to sign Cisse from Marseille in the summer of 2009. The French striker arrived with a major reputation and quickly became one of the club’s leading figures through his goals and personality.

Olympiacos paid €8 million for Gabriel Strefezza from Como and €8.6 million for Armando Gonzalez from Tigres. The club also spent €8.7 million on Hungarian star Lajos Détári from Eintracht Frankfurt, a transfer that created a major sensation nearly four decades ago.

Diogo joined Olympiacos from Portuguesa for €9 million in 2008, while Portuguese defender David Carmo also cost the club €9 million. The ranking continues with PAOK’s €10.5 million signing of Christos Zafeiris, according to the list presented.
