Gwangju Military Airport Relocation Gains Momentum as Site Eyed for Semiconductor Complex

South Korea is accelerating the relocation of the Gwangju military airport, designating its current site as a candidate for a semiconductor advanced national industrial complex in the Honam region. This move is essential for building the complex, and officials from Gwangju City and Muan County are scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to discuss the three prerequisite conditions set by Muan County for the airport's relocation.

Muan County has been boycotting the selection committee for the military airport's relocation site, citing unmet conditions agreed upon in a six-party meeting. These conditions include the prior relocation of the Gwangju civilian airport to Muan International Airport, a 1 trillion won support package, and significant national incentives, such as the designation of a national industrial complex.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport officially designated the 8.26 million square meter Gwangju military airport site as a candidate for the Honam region's semiconductor advanced national industrial complex. Gwangju Mayor Min Hyung-bae welcomed the decision, setting a goal to complete semiconductor production facilities within the current presidential term. "What's important now is speed," Min stated.
