Gwangmyeong City Faces Resident Conflict Over Public Rental Housing in Redevelopment Projects

A significant conflict has emerged between Gwangmyeong City officials and residents of the Cheolsan and Haan redevelopment zones over the inclusion of public rental housing. The city government has been urging developers to incorporate these units into their plans, a request that has met strong resistance from the residents.

Despite holding consultations, the city and the residents have failed to find common ground. Residents are firmly against the idea of adding more public rental housing to the redevelopment projects, leading to a stalemate. This disagreement is creating hurdles for the selection of construction companies, particularly for the Haan Jugong apartment complexes 6 and 7, where the estimated construction cost exceeds 1 trillion won.

Daewoo Engineering & Construction has indicated its intention not to participate in the final bidding process for the Haan Jugong projects, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. The ongoing dispute highlights the challenges in balancing urban redevelopment goals with the concerns and preferences of existing residents.
