However, public reaction softened after King Harald and Queen Sonja publicly welcomed her into the family. Haakon credits his wife with playing a significant role in his personal development, describing her as his social and emotional counterbalance. The couple married in 2001 and have two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, along with Mette-Marit's son Marius Borg Høiby from a previous relationship.
