Halifax newborn death case: Couple charged, defence seeks more time for disclosure

Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his wife Ramandeep Kaur, 26, appeared virtually before a judge Friday to face charges in the death of a Halifax newborn. The couple is accused of concealing the body of a child and committing an indignity to human remains. They also face charges of resisting a peace officer and obstruction of justice.

Their lawyers requested an adjournment for election and plea, citing a significant volume of disclosure documents that need review. The charges stem from an urgent search in May for a missing newborn. The infant's remains were eventually found in a wooded area in Goodwood, Nova Scotia. The search began May 22 after the newborn's mother was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, appearing to have just given birth.

She remained unresponsive and died in hospital the following week. Police identified Singh as a relative of the newborn's mother. Both Singh and Kaur remain in custody. Their defense lawyers are currently reviewing a large amount of disclosure, including medical examiner's reports. Questions surrounding the circumstances of the mother and child's deaths remain unanswered. The couple is scheduled to return to court on September 14.
