Hamburg extends alcohol ban to St. Georg district

Hamburg has implemented an expanded alcohol ban, extending the prohibition from the main train station to encompass significant portions of the adjacent St. Georg district, effective immediately. The measure aims to curb issues associated with public alcohol consumption and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Within the newly designated area, which includes zones around the bus station, Steindamm, and Hansaplatz, residents and visitors are forbidden from drinking alcohol in public. However, carrying alcoholic beverages is permitted. This ban is initially enforced for a period of one year. The expansion comes after local complaints that the existing alcohol ban, in place at the main train station since 2024, had simply shifted the problems of public intoxication and related disturbances to other areas.

St. Georg is recognized as a socially challenged neighborhood. Although the number of reported crimes decreased by 5.9% last year, the district still records the highest number of offenses in Hamburg, with over 29,000 incidents. This contrasts with St. Pauli, which saw a 11.1% reduction in crime, resulting in approximately 13,000 reported offenses.

In addition to the alcohol ban, authorities plan increased checks on individuals in St. Georg and aim to deport foreign offenders. Many individuals causing disturbances or committing crimes in the vicinity of the main train station are reportedly homeless and may lack legal residency status. Concurrently, efforts will be made to provide more support for individuals struggling with addiction and homelessness. Police presence in the district has been heightened to improve safety. Furthermore, surveillance at the main train station and Hansaplatz has been upgraded with AI-assisted technology. To alleviate pressure on residential areas, police have also adjusted their "wake-up patrols," now focusing on clearing sleeping individuals from building entrances around Steindamm and Steintorweg early in the morning.
