Hamburg Universities Warn of Consequences from Planned Budget Cuts

Hamburg's universities are sounding the alarm over planned budget cuts by the city's red-green Senate, warning that the financial constraints could severely impact education and research. The State University Conference (LHK), representing nine institutions, has demanded a clear commitment from the Senate to the scientific community.

The LHK expressed significant concern regarding the financial framework for universities in the 2027/2028 budget. While the universities stand by their agreed-upon goals and performance metrics, the LHK foresees a shortfall in the allocated funds needed to meet these commitments. The consequences are already being felt, with some universities facing the potential endangerment of their study programs.

Ute Lohrentz, spokesperson for the LHK and president of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, emphasized the need for reliable financial conditions. Andreas Timm-Giel, her deputy and president of the Technical University, warned that inadequate funding threatens not only the universities' capabilities but also Hamburg's future viability. He called for a long-term, sustainable financing path that accounts for actual cost developments and provides planning security.

She argued that cutting funding for programs training future nurses will exacerbate the shortage of qualified professionals in the healthcare sector, underscoring that "those who want skilled workers must finance education."
