Hamzat: My Plan is to Make Lagos Human Capital of the World

Lagos State Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, now the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election, articulated his leadership philosophy and vision for Lagos, Africa's largest city. He described the governor's role as akin to a team captain, responsible for aligning diverse expertise with a clear vision to ensure all government policies and projects positively impact the quality of life for ordinary Lagosians.

"The real question is: How does every policy affect the ordinary Lagosian? Whether we build a new hospital or clear drainage channels, how does it improve people’s lives? That is the job of government, to ensure that everything we do, from budgeting to implementation, positively impacts the quality of life of our citizens," Hamzat stated. He stressed that government is a continuum, and his administration aims to complete as many ongoing projects as possible while preparing the next administration to build upon existing foundations, referencing the state's 25-year development master plan extending to 2050.

The role of a governor is like that of the captain of a team. There are many experts who run a state, but the governor’s job is to captain that team, align expertise with vision, and guide delivery.

Key priorities highlighted include the completion and expansion of the Blue Line and Red Line rail projects. Hamzat acknowledged these are capital-intensive but essential for the city's development. His manifesto, a comprehensive 537-page document, details numerous objectives aimed at making Lagos a more resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive human capital hub. He emphasized finishing strong by completing current projects and establishing policies that enable a smooth transition for the subsequent administration.

Hamzat's vision centers on transforming Lagos into the world's human capital center, addressing critical areas such as infrastructure, housing, environmental sustainability, urban development, and politics. He aims to foster a more livable and globally competitive city by ensuring continuity in governance and focusing on projects that directly benefit the populace, thereby enhancing their overall well-being and the city's economic prospects.
