Han Kuang 42: Taiwan Coast Guard tests wartime transition and joint capabilities

Taiwan's Coast Guard is actively demonstrating its readiness to shift from peacetime duties to wartime operations as part of the 'Han Kuang 42' live-fire exercise. The ongoing drills, which run until August 14, emphasize the crucial role the Coast Guard plays in national defense, working in tandem with the military.

The fourth day of the exercise saw the commencement of 'Joint Anti-Landing and Coastal Strike' drills. Despite the outer bands of Typhoon 'Baiu' affecting the region, the training schedule remained unaffected. The Coast Guard's vessels have completed thorough preparations for various scenarios, including fleet outfitting, coastal combat, and escort missions for anti-blockade operations.

Several regional commands are simultaneously conducting a range of exercises, such as 'Joint Maritime Defense Drills,' 'Strongpoint Defense Positions,' 'Flank Alert Missions,' and 'Critical Target Drills.' These maneuvers are designed to ensure swift and precise mission execution when needed, showcasing the robust collaborative capabilities between the armed forces and the Coast Guard.

Ocean Affairs Council Chairperson Kung Pi-ling has made multiple visits to observe the Coast Guard's performance. On August 6, she boarded the "Bali" vessel to inspect 'fleet outfitting,' which involves equipping ships with missiles. Her visit on August 8 focused on the 'light rapid forces emergency departure' drill. These visits underscore the commitment to verifying the Coast Guard's wartime transition mechanisms and the close coordination with the military.
