Hand luggage on planes: Consumer advocates demand clear rules

Consumer advocacy organizations are calling for urgent clarity on airline hand luggage regulations, citing widespread confusion and dissatisfaction among travelers.

As the summer travel season begins, consumer centers have filed lawsuits against several airlines, criticizing their opaque rules and pricing models for carry-on baggage. Ramona Pop, head of the Federation of Consumer Organizations, emphasized the need for travelers to meticulously check luggage dimensions before their trip to avoid costly surprises.

"Clear rules are urgently needed regarding what airlines must transport free of charge," Pop stated. She highlighted that while EU law mandates airlines to carry reasonable hand luggage without extra cost, each airline interprets this rule differently. This inconsistency leads to "chaos at baggage counters" and potential "cost traps" for passengers.

Many airlines permit only one small piece of luggage for free, requiring passengers to pay extra for larger carry-on bags. The consumer advocacy groups have initiated legal action against multiple airlines to address these discrepancies and ensure compliance with passenger rights.

This situation creates significant frustration for travelers, who often face unexpected fees and confusion at the airport. The demand for standardized and transparent hand luggage policies aims to simplify the travel experience and prevent passengers from being caught off guard by airline-specific regulations.
