Handball-Bundesliga: SC Magdeburg signs 2027 Briet as Jónsson replacement

German handball champions SC Magdeburg are preparing for the future by securing the services of French national player Thibaud Briet, who is set to join the team in 2027.

Briet's arrival is a strategic move to replace Elvar Örn Jónsson, who is scheduled to leave Magdeburg for Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the same year. The 26-year-old Briet currently plays for French Champions League participant HBC Nantes and has signed a three-year contract with Magdeburg.

SC Magdeburg's coach and sports director, Bennet Wiegert, expressed enthusiasm about the signing. "Thibaud is a young, dynamic player who already brings a lot of experience at the highest level," Wiegert stated in a club announcement. "With Nantes, he plays in the Champions League, with the French national team he has won medals – and his development is far from over." Briet primarily plays in the left-back position, considered a key role on the court.

Briet has been with Nantes since 2019. Before joining Nantes, he spent three years with his hometown club Rouen HB. He has since become a key player for the French national team, debuting in 2022 against Germany. His accolades include two French Cup titles, the national Champions Trophy, and the League Cup with Nantes. He has also reached the Champions League Final Four twice.
