Hankyoreh reporter Yoon Eun-sook receives Ear Day journalism award

Hankyoreh health reporter Yoon Eun-sook received the fourth Ear Day Journalism Award from the Korean Otological Society at a public ear-health forum in Seoul on the 8th.

The award was presented during the 60th National Ear Health Forum, held at the Korea Press Center in Jung District ahead of Ear Day on September 9. Society president Park Si-nae, a professor at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, presented the honor.

The society has given journalism awards each year since 2022 to one journalist in the newspaper, broadcasting and communications field and one in the medical-specialist press. Yoon was selected after recommendations from an external panel and a review by the society’s award committee.

While reporting, I learned that hearing loss is not simply the inconvenience of not hearing well. It is an important health issue that affects communication with others, social life and quality of life in old age.

Her reporting covered the link between hearing loss and declining cognitive function, the importance of hearing aids and cochlear implants in auditory rehabilitation, and the communication difficulties faced by people with hearing loss.

“While reporting, I learned that hearing loss is not simply the inconvenience of not hearing well. It is an important health issue that affects communication with others, social life and quality of life in old age,” Yoon said. “I will continue to deliver accurate and useful information about ear disease and hearing health in a way that readers can easily understand.”
