Hankyoreh's 'Semiconductor Gap' Series Wins Democratic Journalism Award

Hankyoreh's comprehensive investigative series, "The Widening Gap Fueled by Semiconductors," has been honored with the June Democratic Journalism Award, presented by the Democratic Journalism Committee of the Korean Federation of Press Unions.

The award committee lauded the series for its extensive exploration of societal polarization driven by the semiconductor industry. It commended the reporting for delving into the structural inequalities that have emerged amidst the industry's boom, examining everything from shifts in industrial structure to the growing divide between regular and non-regular workers, and the widening gap in assets. The series also broadened its scope to include an analysis of polarization in Taiwan, offering a comparative perspective.

In its citation, the committee emphasized the critical importance and timeliness of the reporting. "At a time when the entire society is celebrating the 'semiconductor super cycle,' this series has deeply and diversely explored the structural polarization occurring, the widening gap between regular and irregular workers, increasing asset inequality, and the reality of polarization in Taiwan," the committee stated. "Amidst national attention focused on semiconductor and AI industry support and stock market conditions, this report addresses subjects our society must contemplate, making it an essential piece of journalism for the current moment."
