Hantavirus Confirmed in Former Spanish National After Cruise Ship Travel

A former Spanish national has been diagnosed with hantavirus, a rare illness transmitted by rodents, prompting hospitalization in a high-level isolation unit. The Ministry of Health confirmed the case, stating the patient was transferred to the Gomezo Ulla hospital's isolation ward. Despite the diagnosis, authorities emphasize that the risk to the general public remains unchanged, and current epidemiological response measures are still adequate.

This marks the second confirmed instance of hantavirus in Spain. The initial outbreak was associated with the MV Hondius, a ship sailing under the Dutch flag. The vessel departed from Argentina on April 1st, visited remote islands in the South Atlantic, and then proceeded to Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, where remaining passengers were evacuated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported being notified of 12 suspected and confirmed cases related to the outbreak, including three deaths. No fatalities have been reported since May 2nd. Hantaviruses are a group of viruses for which there are no vaccines or specific treatments available. Transmission typically occurs through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva.
