Hanwha Aerospace lands deal to supply K9 howitzer prototypes to U.S. Army

Hanwha Aerospace has achieved a landmark success by signing a contract to supply prototype wheeled self-propelled howitzers to the U.S. Army, marking South Korea's first export of a complete indigenous weapon system to the American military. This breakthrough positions Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace, to penetrate the lucrative U.S. defense market.

Previously, South Korean defense companies primarily exported ammunition and components to the United States. This new agreement signifies a major shift, establishing a crucial foothold for advanced Korean weaponry in a market dominated by established global players. The deal involves the delivery of six K9MH wheeled self-propelled howitzers.

The K9MH is a specialized variant of the renowned K9 self-propelled howitzer, integrating its 155mm artillery and automation technologies onto a wheeled platform. This design offers enhanced mobility, allowing for rapid long-distance travel on roads, a key advantage for modern military operations. The U.S. Army had initially planned to develop a new tracked howitzer with an extended-range 58-caliber gun in the early 2020s, but faced technical hurdles.

Analysts believe this initial prototype contract could unlock substantial future opportunities. Success with the K9MH prototypes may lead to larger production orders from the U.S. Army and potentially spur additional export deals with other nations, further solidifying Hanwha's global presence in the defense industry.
