Hanwha E&C develops AI technology to reduce building energy waste

Hanwha Engineering & Construction is spearheading the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology designed to autonomously manage building energy consumption. The company announced on the 26th its initiative to create systems that predict electricity usage and automatically adjust heating, cooling, and other facilities to prevent waste.

This effort is part of a national project, 'Development and Demonstration of Building Energy Management Simulators Based on BIM and Digital Twins,' led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Energy. The project involves 11 academic and industrial research institutions, including E8, Seoul National University, and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, with a total research and development budget of approximately 15.3 billion won.

The technology will utilize 'digital twin' concepts, creating virtual replicas of buildings to simulate energy efficiency. Hanwha E&C will focus on verifying building operations and maintenance using digital twins, aiming for over 95% accuracy in predicting hourly energy use and reducing peak electricity demand by more than 20%. Ultimately, the project seeks to develop autonomous building operation technology where AI optimizes management without manual intervention.

This initiative builds on Hanwha E&C's previous involvement in a 43.8 billion won national project focused on AI data center energy efficiency. The combined value of these energy efficiency projects now reaches 59.1 billion won, expanding the application of AI-based energy management from data centers to general buildings. Kim Min-seok, head of Hanwha E&C's Architectural Business Division, stated, "This project signifies digital transformation in the architecture field, extending BIM to the operational stage. We will advance our autonomous building operation technology based on AI and digital twins."
