Hardship: Abiodun approves day off, N10,000 allowance for Ogun workers

In a move aimed at providing much-needed relief to civil servants, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has sanctioned a series of palliative measures designed to cushion the effects of rising fuel costs. Effective from April 2026, state workers will benefit from a one-day off duty per week and a special transport allowance of N10,000 per month, both for a duration of three months.

The Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, announced the initiative, attributing the necessity for these measures to the significant hike in fuel pump prices and its subsequent impact on the cost of transportation and the general standard of living. This intervention is seen as a timely response to the economic pressures currently facing many Nigerian households, reflecting a proactive approach by the state government to support its workforce.

Towards providing succour to the workforce of Ogun State in light of the hike in the pump price of fuel in the country and its attendant impact on the cost of transportation and general standard of living, Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a one-day off duty per week for workers in the state.

While the gesture is broadly welcomed, certain categories of workers, including those in essential services like medical, judicial, security, and teaching staff, are exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement. However, they will still receive the N10,000 transport allowance. The implementation details, such as the specific day off for eligible employees, will be managed by accounting officers within each ministry, department, and agency to ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted. This thoughtful consideration aims to balance worker welfare with the imperative of maintaining efficient public service delivery in Ogun State.

This is in addition to the payment of N10,000 special transport allowance as palliatives for three months commencing from April 2026.
