Harry Potter fans force relocation of £430m undersea cable to avoid Dobby’s ‘grave’

A significant undersea power cable project, valued at £430 million, has been rerouted following objections from fans of the Harry Potter film series. The cable, intended to link the UK and Ireland, was initially planned to run near Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Fans argued that the cable's original path would disturb the resting place of Dobby, a beloved fictional elf from the Harry Potter books and films. Dobby's "grave" on the beach, marked by fans with stones reading "Here Lies Dobby," has become a pilgrimage site. However, the National Trust, which manages the land, had previously asked fans to stop leaving tributes due to the beach's ecological sensitivity.

The rerouting means the power cable will now be situated near ancient Bronze Age human burial remains. This decision reflects the unusual influence of popular culture on major infrastructure projects and highlights the tension between heritage, environmental concerns, and fan devotion.
