Harz forest fire near Benneckenstein brought under control

Firefighters have brought a forest fire under control near Benneckenstein in Germany's Harz district, after it consumed about 4.5 hectares of woodland. The blaze, which started on Thursday afternoon, saw approximately 250 emergency personnel deployed to the scene.

About 4.5 hectares of forest were affected by the fire.

Einsatzleiter Dirk Rieche confirmed that the further spread of the fire has been halted. Firefighting efforts were significantly aided by a water-bombing aircraft, which made rapid turnaround trips for refueling. The local forestry service also provided technical support, clearing access routes for the emergency crews. Firefighters do not anticipate the fire spreading further, though it remains uncertain if it will be completely extinguished before nightfall.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The region is experiencing high forest fire risk, with the Harz area under danger level 4 out of 5. Some parts of the Wittenberg district are at the highest risk level 5. A warning that had been issued for the towns of Benneckenstein, Elend, Tanne, and Trautenstein due to the fire and heavy smoke was lifted late Thursday afternoon. Residents were still advised to avoid the affected area and keep windows and doors closed.
