Hasan Piker Offers a New Face for an Undercurrent in U.S. Politics

Hasan Piker’s political reach now extends well beyond livestream commentary. Born in New Jersey in 1991 to a Turkish family, Piker studied political science and communication at Rutgers University before working as a producer and presenter for The Young Turks, founded by his uncle Cenk Uygur. He began streaming on Twitch in 2018 and left the program in 2020 to work independently.

Piker now has 3.1 million followers on Twitch, while 14 million people watch his livestreams each month. His 2024 election-night broadcast drew 7.5 million viewers, a scale that the article presents as largely inaccessible to traditional political media.

He describes himself as a socialist and has long been associated with the Democratic Socialists of America. His politics differ from the classical left through what he calls a “post-liberal” vision. His influence became more directly electoral from 2025 and accelerated in 2026. He took part in Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral campaign, which ended with Mamdani becoming the first democratic socialist mayor in the city’s history. Piker also campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate primary. El-Sayed narrowly defeated institutional party nominee Haley Stevens, and Piker’s rallies and campaign activity were described as important factors in the result.
