Haze blankets Malaysia, causing a 259% surge in asthma cases

Malaysia is currently grappling with a severe haze situation, with large parts of the country, particularly the west coast of the peninsula and Sarawak in East Malaysia, blanketed in smog originating from Indonesia's Kalimantan and Sumatra. The impact on public health is stark. According to monitoring data from the Ministry of Health, cases of respiratory infections have surged by 124%, rising from 1,637 to 3,674 between epidemiological weeks 32 and 33. Most alarmingly, asthma cases have seen an extraordinary increase of 259%, jumping from 61 to 219 cases during the same period. Air quality monitoring stations across Malaysia paint a grim picture. Out of 68 stations, only five reported "good" air quality (API 0-50) as of 11 a.m. today. Five other locations registered "unhealthy" levels (API 101-200), while the majority of the country is experiencing "moderate" air quality (API 51-100). Levels above 300 are considered "hazardous." The haze has visibly altered the urban landscape, particularly in Kuala Lumpur. Commuters and pedestrians are increasingly seen wearing masks, and the once-clear city skyline is now obscured by a grayish-white haze, with the outlines of distant buildings barely visible. Visibility has also been affected in some areas. With the nation's Independence Day on August 31 and Malaysia Day on September 16 approaching, the haze poses a challenge to planned celebrations. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed hope that the haze situation would improve to ensure the events proceed smoothly. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil indicated that the government is evaluating whether to adjust the scale or venues of the National Day celebrations, taking into account the health of the estimated 1,500 secondary school students expected to participate.
