Keelung's Wulun Baseball Field to Feature Underground Flood Basin Holding Up to 87,000 Tons

Keelung is set to construct a multi-purpose underground facility beneath the Wulun Baseball Field, designed to significantly reduce flood risks in the Wulun Creek area. The project, which has received central government approval for design funding, will create a three-level underground space. The first basement level will serve as a parking lot, alleviating local parking shortages, while the second and third levels will function as a massive flood retention basin. This basin will have the capacity to store between 72,000 and 87,000 tons of water during intense rainfall events. City officials plan to clear the parking area before typhoons or extreme storms arrive, transforming the underground levels into a crucial flood control zone. This initiative is part of a broader plan to improve flood resilience in Keelung, a city prone to water damage due to its low-lying terrain. The project follows recent upstream improvements to the Wulun Creek, which have already lowered flood levels. Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of creek water levels and proactive deployment of pumping equipment and flood barriers for businesses. The city aims to complete the baseball field flood control project swiftly, utilizing modern engineering to combat long-standing flood issues and build a more resilient urban environment.
