Haze Engulfs Pekanbaru, Residents Advised to Limit Outdoor Activity

Residents of Pekanbaru, the capital city of Riau province in Indonesia, are being urged to limit their time outdoors and wear masks as thick haze blankets the city. The smog is a direct consequence of widespread forest and land fires (karhutla) in the region, which have severely degraded air quality. The situation has become so critical that local authorities have issued advisories for public health and safety.

Monitoring by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicated that Pekanbaru's air quality on Sunday, August 23, reached "very unhealthy" levels. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) peaked at 170 micrograms per cubic meter. This alarming level of pollution prompted the Pekanbaru city government to implement distance learning for students from early childhood education to junior high school on Monday, August 24, as a measure to reduce children's exposure to the hazardous air.

In response to the deteriorating visibility and health risks, the Riau Regional Police's Traffic Directorate has been distributing thousands of masks to the public and motorists. They are also reminding drivers to reduce their speed, maintain safe distances, and use their vehicle lights due to the significantly reduced visibility on the roads. The haze not only poses a health threat but also creates hazardous driving conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.
