HB Køge advances in Champions League qualifiers after beating Hearts

HB Køge's women's team is edging closer to the Champions League league stage after securing a crucial 2-1 victory over Scotland's Hearts on Saturday. This win at home means the Danish champions have triumphed in the mini-tournament of the Champions League qualification's second round.

The path to the league stage, the final hurdle before potential qualification, now lies before HB Køge. The match at Capelli Sport Stadion initially seemed challenging when Hearts took the lead in the 13th minute with a goal from Kayla Jardine. This 1-0 scoreline persisted until halftime.

However, HB Køge mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Kenyan player Mwanalima Jereko equalized from a corner kick, and in stoppage time, national team player Mille Gejl scored the decisive winning goal. The draw for the third and final qualification round is scheduled for Tuesday.

This marks HB Køge's second appearance in the Champions League, having debuted in the 2021/22 season without securing any points in the group stage. The tournament format has since evolved, mirroring the men's competition with a league play format. Earlier in the week, Brøndby's women's team was eliminated from Champions League qualification after a 0-2 loss to Ajax.
