HD Hyundai Welding Robots with Expert Know-How to Enter U.S. Shipyards

HD Hyundai's advanced intelligent welding robots, infused with the expertise of veteran welders, are set to be implemented in U.S. shipyards. The technology allows workers with as little as one year of experience to oversee the operation of two robots, significantly boosting work safety and efficiency, according to the company.

A pilot project has commenced at Ingalls Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of U.S. defense contractor Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). Ingalls Shipbuilding, located in Mississippi, is the largest warship construction facility in the United States. This initiative marks a significant step in bringing HD Hyundai's automated welding solutions to the American shipbuilding industry.

The robot welding operations are overseen by a worker with about one year of welding experience.

The core technology being introduced is HD Hyundai's self-developed intelligent welding system. This system automatically recognizes welding targets and conditions, adjusting the welding position in real-time. Operators are required only to set the welding area and can simultaneously manage multiple robots, intervening only when necessary. Data collected during the process is stored for quality control, process improvement, and historical tracking.

HD Hyundai plans to further enhance this system with artificial intelligence. Currently, human operators input welding parameters, but the company envisions a future where AI analyzes design information to determine welding conditions and sequences, with humans overseeing the overall process. This technological advancement aims to expand collaboration with U.S. shipyards.
