Sogang University AI Lab Partners with LG Electronics, AIVY for Appliance Tech Development

Sogang University's AI Creative Convergence Departmental Research Institute has launched a significant project to develop next-generation AI technology for home appliances. The initiative involves a strategic partnership with global electronics giant LG Electronics and AIVY, an AI startup specializing in wearable devices, based at the Sogang-Pangyo Digital Innovation Campus.

Led by Professor Ha Jeong-wook, the project's primary goal is to embed sophisticated AI into everyday appliances, starting with microwave ovens. This aims to transcend current limitations and offer novel user experiences. Unlike purely theoretical research, this endeavor is focused on creating practical, industry-ready technologies.

Despite the summer break, Sogang University's undergraduate researchers, Kim Dong-ha (Electronics, '21), Bang Ga-yeon (Computer Science, '24), and Bae Jun-hwan (Computer Science, '23), are actively engaged at the Pangyo campus. They are working alongside AIVY's professional researchers, collaborating closely with LG Electronics. Their involvement spans the entire process, from collecting field-specific data to developing core AI models for device control.

This joint project is being hailed as a model for next-generation industry-academia cooperation, effectively merging the creative talent of a university, the robust technological infrastructure of a large corporation, and the agile innovation of a startup. Professor Ha expressed his confidence, stating, "The passion of our AI Creative Convergence undergraduate researchers, who are dedicating their summer break to this work, will soon bear fruit in smart home appliance technologies that change daily life." He added, "Through this collaboration, we will provide unwavering support to help students grow into key AI talents equipped with practical R&D capabilities."
