Colt Gray was just 14 years old when he carried out the attack at a school in Winder, Georgia, killing two 14-year-old students and two teachers. Nine other individuals were injured in the incident. Judge Nicholas Primm emphasized during the sentencing that the motive was not hate, stating, "You didn't even know anyone there. It was about the fame you get from something like this."

Despite his young age at the time of the crime, Gray was tried and sentenced under adult criminal law. The judge also addressed the defendant's family background, noting a significant failure in his upbringing. "Your parents both failed you. However, he stressed that this familial failure did not absolve Gray of personal responsibility for his choices and the person he has become.

In a related development, the shooter's father, Colin Gray, was previously found guilty of manslaughter and negligent homicide. He had purchased the semi-automatic rifle used in the attack for his son as a Christmas gift in 2023, despite being aware of his son's online threats to commit a school shooting. It is exceptionally rare in the United States for a parent to face legal consequences for a crime committed by their child.
