Head of Neurosurgery at Uruguay's Pereira Rossell Hospital Resigns Amidst Care and Supply Concerns

A significant upheaval has struck Uruguay's Pereira Rossell Hospital following the resignation of its Neurosurgery chief, Gonzalo Costa. Costa cited "omission of assistance" and a perceived lack of essential supplies as reasons for his departure, sparking considerable debate.

Authorities, including the president of the public health services administration (ASSE) and the Minister of Public Health, have refuted claims that patient care has been compromised by Costa's exit and that of two other on-call neurosurgeons. They maintain that the service continues to operate effectively.

Humberto Prinzo, director of the Neurosurgery academic unit at the University of the Republic and president of the Uruguayan Neurosurgery Society, stated that Costa had informed him of difficulties over the past 18 months. Prinzo asserted he had repeatedly offered assistance and management support for the hospital service.

"I offered my hand, he did not take it," Prinzo remarked about Costa, with whom he claims to maintain a good relationship. Prinzo added that Costa never formally requested the academic unit's support or brought his concerns to the Neurosurgery Society, preferring to attempt solutions independently.
