Health Emergency Urged in Piura, Peru, Amid Aggressive Dengue and Leptospirosis Outbreak

The northern Peruvian department of Piura is facing a critical health situation, prompting calls for a sanitary emergency declaration. Health officials are coordinating with the Ministry of Health to address a dual threat: an aggressive new variant of dengue and a sharp increase in leptospirosis cases. The dengue outbreak, specifically linked to serotype D3, which is known to cause more severe symptoms, has been concentrated in the Morropón province. While concerning, it's important to note that no dengue-related deaths have occurred in Piura this year, and overall cases show a decreasing trend, except in Morropón where a stagnant oxidation pond is suspected of fueling infections. The leptospirosis situation is more dire, with 439 probable cases and 93 confirmed infections, tragically resulting in six deaths since March. Health authorities attribute the rise in leptospirosis to a variant that can be carried by a wider range of animals beyond the usual rodents, pigs, and dogs. Declaring a sanitary emergency is seen as crucial, as it would unlock necessary budgetary and organizational resources to combat these outbreaks effectively.
