Health Ministry orders urgent review of hospital food services after salmonella outbreak; 41 residents stable

At least 41 medical residents who developed salmonella symptoms at the Dr. Eduardo Liceaga General Hospital required hospital treatment, but all are now in stable condition, Health Secretary David Kershenobich said.

Kershenobich said authorities had opened an investigation at other National Health Institutes to prevent similar incidents. He also ordered urgent inspections of the hygienic and sanitary conditions in food services across public hospitals.

The inspections involve the National Epidemiology Directorate, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, the Coordinating Commission for National Health Institutes and High-Specialty Hospitals, as well as the IMSS, ISSSTE, IMSS Bienestar and Pemex. Officials were specifically instructed to examine hospital dining rooms and kitchens.

Kershenobich said the results of the reviews must be reported to his office. He stressed that medical residents play a fundamental role in hospitals and that institutions must provide safe and dignified conditions for their work.
