Heat health alerts in England as temperatures set to reach 34C

Much of England is under amber and yellow heat health alerts as temperatures are expected to soar, potentially reaching 34C in some areas. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the alerts, which are in effect from Monday and will last until Wednesday, August 5.

Amber alerts cover London, the South East, the East of England, and the East Midlands. These warnings highlight the likelihood of significant impacts across health and social care services. Authorities are particularly concerned about a potential rise in deaths among vulnerable populations due to the extreme heat.

Less severe yellow alerts have been issued for the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands, and the South West. The North East is the only region currently without a heat health alert. These updated warnings replace those from last week's heatwave and anticipate a fresh period of potentially hazardous temperatures affecting millions.

Monday is predicted to be the hottest day of the week, with hot air moving north from France. Southern and eastern parts of England are expected to widely reach the low to mid-30s Celsius, with isolated spots possibly hitting 34C. While Scotland, Northern Ireland, and western Britain will experience cloudier skies and rain, the South and East of England will remain warm and humid.

By midweek, a cold front is expected to bring cooler Atlantic air, signaling an end to the brief heatwave. Scotland and Northern Ireland will continue to see heavy rain, while southern England is forecast to remain warmer and mostly dry before more settled weather returns later in the week.
