Heat in Hessen: Emergency services ask for public's help during hot weather

Frankfurt's emergency services are bracing for a surge in calls as the region anticipates several days of extreme heat. The Frankfurt Fire Department has proactively increased personnel and vehicle capacity until early next week to manage the expected rise in emergencies.

Andreas Ruhs, Head of Operations Preparation, emphasized the public's role in alleviating pressure on emergency responders and hospitals. "Every individual can help relieve the burden on the emergency services and hospitals by behaving in a manner appropriate to the weather," he stated in a press release.

The fire department issued a series of recommendations for residents to cope with the high temperatures. These include wearing sun protection and hats, drinking plenty of fluids, keeping sleeping areas cool, and scheduling strenuous activities for cooler parts of the day. Proper ventilation of living spaces during cooler hours is also advised.

Furthermore, to prevent vegetation fires, the public is reminded to avoid open flames, properly dispose of cigarettes, and refrain from parking or grilling on dry grass. The department also stressed that the emergency number should only be used for genuine emergencies and urged special attention to be paid to the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
