Heat warning issued for southern Germany as schools reopen

Southern Germany is bracing for a sweltering start to the week, with the German Weather Service issuing heat warnings for several regions. The high temperatures, expected to reach up to 36 degrees Celsius in some areas, coincide with the return to school for hundreds of thousands of students in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland after a six-week summer break.

While the south faces a heatwave, the north and northwest of the country will experience significantly cooler weather, with temperatures ranging from 19 to 25 degrees Celsius. The change in weather patterns is attributed to a cold front moving across the northeast towards Poland, bringing with it the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasters predict that while some areas will remain sunny and dry, others, particularly in the southwest and Bavaria, can expect developing clouds, showers, and potentially strong thunderstorms throughout the day. The heat is particularly inconvenient for students returning to classrooms after a lengthy holiday.
