Heatwave and storms to hit most of Poland this weekend

Much of Poland is preparing for a significant heatwave expected to hit over the weekend, prompting the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) to issue heat and storm alerts across 15 of the country's 16 voivodeships.

Thirteen voivodeships are under a Level II alert for heat, with temperatures predicted to soar as high as 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). The IMGW has warned that maximum daytime temperatures will range from 30°C to 33°C, with nighttime temperatures between 17°C and 20°C from Saturday afternoon until Sunday evening.

Level I heat warnings are in place for the Pomeranian, parts of the West Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, and Mazovian voivodeships, where temperatures could reach 32°C on Saturday. Similar temperatures are forecast for the Lublin and Subcarpathian voivodeships, with lows between 15°C and 17°C overnight.

In addition to the heat, several regions are also facing storm warnings. Alerts have been issued for parts of the West Pomeranian and Greater Poland voivodeships, as well as for the Lubusz and Lower Silesian voivodeships. These storms may bring heavy rainfall, with amounts ranging from 20 to 35 mm, and wind gusts up to 80 km/h, accompanied by local hail. The Government Centre for Security (RCB) has also issued a warning for the West Pomeranian region, advising people to seek shelter during thunderstorms.
