Heatwave claims 26 lives in South Korea; heart attacks also a danger

South Korea is grappling with a deadly heatwave, with 26 people confirmed to have died from heat-related illnesses this summer. The number of fatalities represents a stark increase compared to the previous year, despite a slight decrease in the overall number of heat-related illness cases.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, from May 15 to August 7, a total of 3,089 people suffered from heat-related illnesses. Of these, 26 are presumed to have died. This figure indicates a concerning rise in mortality, even as the total number of reported cases has fallen by 8% compared to the same period last year.

The most vulnerable demographic appears to be the elderly, with 35% of all heat-related illness cases occurring in individuals aged 65 and older. This highlights the critical need for targeted public health interventions and support for seniors during extreme weather conditions.
