Heatwave Grips South Korea Ahead of Chuseok; Weekend Showers Expected

South Korea is bracing for continued heat and humidity as the traditional Chuseok holiday approaches, despite the upcoming arrival of Chuseok, a period typically marking the end of summer's intense heat. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued heatwave advisories for several regions, including the Chungcheong provinces, southern provinces, and Jeju Island.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius in many areas nationwide. Daytime highs on August 21st are predicted to range from 28 to 35 degrees Celsius. Looking ahead, the forecast for August 22nd indicates morning lows between 21 and 26 degrees Celsius and daytime highs between 28 and 34 degrees Celsius. August 23rd is expected to see similar conditions, with morning lows of 21 to 26 degrees Celsius and daytime highs of 30 to 34 degrees Celsius.

Adding to the discomfort, scattered showers are anticipated across the country over the weekend. As of 10:20 AM on August 20th, heavy rain warnings were issued for northern Chungcheong Province, with a heavy rain advisory in effect for Danyang. Showers are expected in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon Province, Chungnam Province, northern and central Chungcheong Province, and northern Gyeongbuk Province. The southern regions and Jeju Island may experience showers through the evening of August 20th.

The forecast for August 22nd includes continued rain in the Seoul metropolitan area and inland Gangwon Province in the morning, followed by showers in various parts of the country in the afternoon. Expected rainfall amounts for August 22nd include 10 to 60 mm for Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province, and 5 to 40 mm for inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province. Some areas in northern and southeastern Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province could also see showers.
