Heatwave sends 131 to ER in one day; 28 deaths this summer

South Korea is grappling with a severe heatwave, leading to a surge in heat-related illnesses and fatalities. On a single recent day, 131 individuals sought emergency medical attention nationwide due to heat exposure.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the number of reported heat-related illness cases has reached 3,237 since May 15. Tragically, 28 suspected deaths have been attributed to the extreme temperatures during this period.

The daily influx of patients to emergency rooms underscores the severity of the ongoing heatwave. One notable incident involved a man in his 30s in Incheon's Gyeyang-gu who died from heatstroke while on the street. Another death was reported in Wonju, Gangwon Province.

Authorities are urging the public to take precautions against the extreme heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and seeking cool environments. The persistent high temperatures pose a significant public health risk, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
