Heavy rain causes widespread flooding and traffic chaos in Hanoi

Hanoi experienced significant disruption Tuesday evening as a heavy rainstorm inundated numerous streets, leading to widespread traffic jams and vehicle breakdowns. The downpour, which lasted for approximately one hour, left several major roads submerged, causing considerable difficulty for commuters.

On Phuong Canh Street in Xuan Phuong Ward, a section approximately one kilometer long was severely flooded. This resulted in a large number of vehicles stalling, forcing residents to push their cars through the water. One local resident, identified only as Duc, described the situation as unusually severe, noting that what is normally a 30-minute commute turned into an hour-long ordeal of pushing his stalled vehicle.

Near the My Dinh National Stadium, authorities opened storm drain covers in an attempt to expedite water drainage. Despite these efforts, localized flooding persisted in several areas. Major intersections along Tran Huu Duc Street, including those with Le Duc Tho and Nguyen Co Thach, experienced complete traffic gridlock, with vehicles unable to move.

Similar flooding was reported on My Dinh and Thien Hien streets. As of 7:30 PM, heavy rain continued in the My Dinh area, further complicating travel. The images captured by Thanh Nien reporters showed submerged roads, stalled motorcycles, and long lines of traffic, illustrating the extent of the disruption caused by the intense rainfall.
