Heavy Rain Floods Four Districts in West Nias

Heavy rain that lashed West Nias on Sunday caused the Lahomi and Moro'o rivers to overflow, inundating four districts in North Sumatra with floodwaters reaching about 100 centimeters.

The affected areas are Lahomi, Mandrehe, West Mandrehe and Sirombu. The flooding submerged residents' homes and damaged agricultural land, including rice fields and irrigation networks. Several roads used by local communities also suffered damage, potentially disrupting daily activity in areas affected by standing water and damaged infrastructure.

The flooding occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, as high rainfall in West Nias caused the Lahomi and Moro'o rivers to overflow, resulting in flooding in several areas.

Sri Wahyuni Pancasilawati, head of emergency response, equipment and logistics at the North Sumatra Disaster Management Agency, said the flooding followed high rainfall across West Nias. She said preliminary information showed no deaths or injuries, and no residents had evacuated.

Road access used by residents at several points was also damaged by the flooding.

The West Nias government, through its disaster agency, has assessed and surveyed several affected locations while coordinating with residents and relevant authorities to determine conditions and response needs. The North Sumatra agency is also coordinating with its West Nias counterpart and monitoring developments.

As of Monday, Sept. 7, the West Nias agency continued its response according to conditions on the ground. Authorities urged people in potentially affected areas to remain vigilant because more heavy rain could raise river levels and cause the flooding to spread again.
