Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding in Pingtung, Taiwan

Pingtung County in Taiwan experienced severe flooding this morning after heavy rainfall, driven by the outer circulation of Typhoon Sarlder, overwhelmed local drainage systems. Kanding recorded an intense hourly rainfall of 89 millimeters between 7 and 8 AM, with upstream areas of Chaozhou and Xinbei also receiving substantial amounts, measuring 73 and 78 millimeters respectively during the following hour.

The deluge caused roads to flood, including a section of Pingtung County Highway 187 in Xinbei Daitie. In Chaozhou, the Fuchun Li area, which had previously flooded due to the Green Creek overflowing during an event on June 22, experienced renewed inundation. Although this area was spared during the heavy rains of August 22, the recent short-duration, intense rainfall upstream caused the Green Creek to breach its banks once more.

The flooding occurred during the morning commute, forcing many residents to risk wading through calf-deep water. Police were deployed to set up traffic cones and warn motorists about the hazardous conditions. The rapid accumulation of water highlighted the inability of the existing drainage infrastructure to cope with such extreme weather events.

This incident follows closely on the heels of significant rainfall from a southwest monsoon convergence low-pressure system on August 22. The repeated heavy downpours underscore the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather, exacerbated by the outer bands of the current typhoon. Authorities are monitoring the situation as the heavy rain continues to impact various parts of Pingtung.
