Heavy rains cause flooding and road damage in Caracas and Miranda

Caracas and Miranda state in Venezuela experienced significant flooding and road disruptions following heavy rains on Saturday night, August 22. The downpours, associated with the passage of tropical wave No. 40, caused streets to inundate, vehicles to become trapped, and trees to fall.

The autopista Valle-Coche in Caracas was particularly hard-hit, with the El Valle river overflowing its banks. Images shared on social media showed citizens seeking higher ground as water levels rose.

Former metropolitan mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma, criticized the capital's infrastructure, arguing that the severe effects of the rain were not solely due to nature. He pointed to deteriorating drainage systems, lack of maintenance, and collapsed water systems as factors that turn intense rainfall into a threat.

Despite the widespread disruption, the Caracas Metro system maintained normal operations. However, cable car systems were temporarily closed for maintenance. Emergency crews were deployed to affected areas to clear mud and debris from roads, aiming to restore traffic flow and ensure drainage systems remained functional.
