Heavy rains cause major floods and landslides in Caracas and La Guaira

Torrential rains lashed Caracas and the surrounding La Guaira state on Saturday afternoon, triggering severe flooding and landslides across multiple areas. Social media platforms were flooded with images and videos depicting the force of the water as it surged through streets, carrying away motorcycles and causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

In the Antímano parish, the Carapita sector experienced particularly strong currents that swept through the area, affecting residents and their belongings. Similar conditions were reported in other parts of the capital city and along the crucial highway connecting Caracas with the central coast.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) had issued forecasts for scattered rains over the Greater Caracas area and La Guaira state earlier on Saturday. The institute noted the presence of cloud cover generating precipitation, especially in mountainous regions and the eastern parts of the state. These weather patterns are occurring amidst heightened atmospheric activity in the region.

Inameh's recent reports indicate a busy season for tropical waves, with three active systems currently in the Atlantic and Caribbean basins. To date, 26 out of 30 tropical waves forecast for the season have already entered Venezuelan territory. This suggests a continued possibility of heavy rainfall in the capital and adjacent states in the coming days.
