Heavy traffic expected in northern Germany amid holiday travel and station closure

Schleswig-Holstein is bracing for a potentially turbulent weekend marked by considerable travel disruptions. The region's main railway hub, Lübeck Hauptbahnhof, has been closed from Friday evening until Monday morning for essential signal box maintenance, forcing thousands of rail passengers to rely on replacement bus services.

The closure affects numerous regional lines, including those connecting to Kiel, Lüneburg, Travemünde, and other destinations. The replacement buses will operate from designated stops near the station, with specific arrangements for different routes. The disruption is compounded by the fact that it coincides with the Lübeck Pride festival and the final weekend of school holidays in Schleswig-Holstein, leading to expectations of increased passenger volume.

Passengers are advised to check their travel plans in advance and allow extra time. Notably, bicycle transport on the replacement buses will not be possible due to limited capacity. The regional transport association NAH.SH has listed the affected lines, emphasizing the inconvenience for travelers.

Because the closure coincides with Lübeck Pride and the last holiday weekend in Schleswig-Holstein, increased crowds are expected.

On the roads, the ADAC anticipates heavy traffic as summer holidays conclude in Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. This coincides with continued vacation and excursion travel, leading to predictions of significant congestion on major north-south routes in both directions.

Therefore, we must expect high loads on the important north-south axes in both directions.

The A7 highway, connecting Flensburg to Hamburg and Hannover, is expected to be particularly affected. The ADAC spokesperson noted that traffic from various directions converges on the A7, making it susceptible to lengthy tailbacks even from minor disruptions. The A1, between the Baltic coast, Lübeck, and Hamburg, is another hotspot, with construction sites near Sereetz, Ratekau, and Pansdorf creating bottlenecks. Increased traffic is also expected on the A23 between Hamburg and the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, especially on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons and evenings.
