HEDA hails EFCC for pursuing high-profile corruption cases

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) has lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its unwavering commitment to investigating and prosecuting corruption cases involving public officials.

This commendation follows recent proceedings in the trial of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who faces allegations of procurement irregularities concerning the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). HEDA described the prosecution as a clear demonstration of the EFCC's dedication to ensuring accountability, irrespective of the accused's status. Evidence presented in the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja includes correspondence from the Bureau of Public Procurement and contract award documents, challenging the former minister's claims of acting on a presidential directive.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, HEDA highlighted that revelations from the EFCC's investigation suggest Ngige allegedly defied presidential authority in appointing the late labour leader, Chief Frank Kokori, as NSITF chairman, thereby preventing him from assuming office. HEDA further alleged that the former minister had personal interests in the agency's management, which Kokori's appointment might have hindered.

While affirming the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, HEDA urged for the case to proceed without undue delay or interference, reinforcing the judiciary's critical role in upholding justice and the rule of law.
