Heightened threat level as Trump speaks at gala dinner

Threats against elected officials in the United States have surged by 40% this year, according to the Secret Service, creating a heightened security environment, particularly for the president. This alarming trend comes as President Trump prepares to deliver a speech at the annual Correspondents' Dinner, an event that draws significant security attention.

Secret Service Chief Sean Curran stated, "We expect malicious individuals to show up," highlighting the agency's preparedness for potential disruptions. The urgency of the situation is underscored by recent incidents, including an attempted attack on April 25th at a Washington D.C. hotel where a man armed with a shotgun and pistol was stopped before entering the Correspondents' Dinner. A bodyguard, Victor Gonzales, was shot but saved by his protective vest during this incident.

Beyond the Correspondents' Dinner incident, the Secret Service is investigating at least three other alleged assassination attempts against the president this year. These include a February incident where a man was shot and killed outside Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, carrying fuel and a rifle, and two separate incidents in May near the White House involving armed individuals who opened fire on guards.

This rise in threats coincides with research from the University of Chicago indicating an increased acceptance of political violence across the political spectrum. The White House Correspondents' Association hosts the annual dinner, a tradition over a century old, celebrating the First Amendment and raising funds for journalism scholarships. President Trump's attendance marks his first time at the event, despite his frequent criticism of established media outlets.
